AEU - ACT Branch Part-Time Schools' Organiser Vacancy

Executive at its meeting on 30 August 2010 endorsed a process for succession planning arrangements within the AEU office. The proposal included the creation of a part-time Schools Organiser position working Mondays and Fridays.

Equal Pay Day - 4 September
Women are still in the red with the gender pay gap

Equal Pay Day falls on Saturday 4 September this year. This day illustrates the 66 extra days women have to work after the end of the financial year to earn the same as men, because Australian women, on average, still earn 18% less than men. Equal Pay Day is 3 days further into the year than last year so the gender pay gap is getting worse!

On 11 August 2010, the AEU - ACT Branch met with the panel that is reviewing Commonwealth schools funding. This five person panel of eminent Australians is travelling the nation meeting with interest groups including each of the AEU's Branches/Associated Bodies. Negotiations for a new ACT Public Service Enterprise Agreement are close to their conclusion. Click the link below to see details of what has been agreed in the negotiation process. Once final drafting is completed, the proposed agreement will be circulated for employee consideration. The AEU will contact our non-teaching staff members in schools to give you details about the final agreement and the balloting process when these are available.

The ACT Branch invites applications for the above vacancies from members of the AEU, persons eligible to be members of the ACT Branch and officers or employees of AEU Branches and associated bodies. Members of the ACT Government Service are eligible to take LWOP from the employer to fill these positions.
Applications must be received no later than 4:30pm on Monday 13 September 2010. The applications will be considered by a Sub-Committee of Branch Executive on 14 September 2010 prior to the Sub-Committee putting forward to 18 September Branch Council the names of all applications deemed suitable for the positions. The terms of office for both positions is Term 1 2011 to Term 1 2014

Discussion Paper: Improving ACT Public High Schools and Colleges

The Minister for Education recently released a discussion paper: Improving ACT Public High Schools and Colleges which raises a diverse range of proposals for radical change in the high school and college sectors. If implemented in part or as a whole, these proposals will have significant implications for ACT public school students and many AEU members. It is vital, in the brief timeframe available [submissions are due by Tuesday 7 September] that members from all sectors get involved in discussing the issues raised in the discussion paper. Sub-Branches are asked to provide feedback to the AEU no later than Wednesday 1 September 2010.

The AEU supports the Australian Young, Pregnant and Parenting Network [AYPPN] which was developed to connect all those working to improve outcomes for pregnant and parenting young people and their children and to advocate for better policy and program support. The AYPPN Research Symposium will focus on current Australian research in the field of teenage pregnancy and parenting. Early Bird registrations close Friday 27 August!

Paid Parental Leave finally delivered!

After more than 30 years of campaigning, a government-funded universal paid parental leave scheme will commence in Australia from January 2011. Congratulations to unionists, particularly women, who have persisted to achieve PPL! This scheme is in addition to the ACT Government's 18 weeks' paid maternity leave. Whilst PPL is a huge win, union members should continue to seek new and better entitlements from employers.
