AEU Federal Conference League Tables Decision

Posted 18/2/2010

AEU Federal Conference considered the matter of League Tables at its Conference in January 2010. The Conference called on Minister Gillard to take steps to protect the data generated through NAPLAN from third-party use to create League Tables, and indicated that the AEU would consider not cooperating with NAPLAN in 2010 if such protections were not forthcoming.

AEU Campaign Opposing League Tables

Posted 8/2/2010

League tables which rank schools based on raw test scores are bad for students, schools and education. Naming and shaming schools that don't get high marks in the tests is devastating for those school communities and makes it harder for students and teachers. Already in 2010 newspapers in Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra and the Northern Territory have published damaging league tables using data from the My School website. The Education Minister Julia Gillard says league tables are misleading and make the job for teachers harder, but so far she has refused to act. Only by working together can we convince the Federal Government to take action on this important issue.

Extreme Temperatures in Schools

Reposted 1/2/2010

There have been a number of concerns raised about working/teaching under duress in schools during times of Extreme Temperatures. The AEU policy on physical conditions in schools states that the minimum acceptable temperature is 17 degrees and the maximum is 30 degrees. Australian Standards [1837-1976] for offices states that the minimum temperature is 20 degrees and the maximum 26 degrees. For a stepped strategy and instructions on managing extreme temperatures at your school under the new Work Safety Bill 2008 click here.
